      JOHN SCOTT SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
      1. John1 Scott, born , died at Suffield, Conn., 2 Jan. 1689/90;
      married at Springfield, Mass., 20 July 1659, Sarah2 Bliss [Bliss Famil y, No. 1, viii], born [say 1638], died at Springfield, 27 Sept. 1705 , daughter of
      Thomas1 and Margaret ( ) Bliss. She married second, at Springfield,
      19 Nov. 1690, Samuel Terry, who died at Springfield in 1730.
      He came to Springfield, Mass., not long before his marriage, and on 2 3 Dec. 1659 had a seat in the meeting house. On 19 Feb. 1661/2, with J ohn Dumbleton and others, he was granted land "between Agawam River &a mp; the 3d division & their lotts by ye Cold Springe & the fen ce y' is to be sett up from ye great River to Agawam River." He had ot her grants in 1664 and 1665. In the latter year he received a heavy fi ne for neglecting his fence after a third warning, and early in 1666 w as himself appointed a fence viewer; yet in 1673 and in 1678 he was ag ain fined for defective fencing, while serv ing again as a fence viewe r between these offenses, in 1676. In 1669 he re ceived payment for ki lling a wolf, and in 1670 had cattle impounded and had to pay the "pou ndage" for violating an order. On 4 Feb. 1678/9, he was granted thirt y acres of lowland, but in January 1681/2 was called "of Suf field," t hough he was still a land owner in Springfield, 21 May 1688.*
      He was a soldier in the "Falls Fight" in 1676, and his grandson, Joh n Scott of "Elbows" claimed a land grant on this account in 1741.*
      Inventory of the estate of John Scott of Suffield was presented the la st Tuesday in March, 1690, by Mary [sic] the relict, and administratio n was granted to her with Samuel Bliss, Sr.
      On 10 Feb. 1693, Samuel Terry who married the widow Sarah Scott, broug ht in his account of administration, there being £24.18.0 allowed to h er for payment of debts and bringing up the children. The original dis tribution is haphazard, a series of jottings with many insertions, an d the recorded copy is not much better, as the re corder seems to hav e had difficulty in puzzling it out. It refers to the eldest son (a do uble share), Ebenezar Scot, William Scot, and to the five daughters, w ith mention of Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah (Ben Leonard's wife), Hannah, an d "Marg wife to Remington," and there is a reference to Samuel Bliss a s uncle to the children. Sarah Terry petitioned 26 Dec. 1694 that he r husband Samuel Terry had absented himself and left her in a distress ed condition, and she was allowed to administer her former husband's e state, and to take, use or dispose of any part of said Terry's estat e that may be found. On 1 Jan. 1705/6, administration on the estate o f Sarah Terry of Suffield was granted to William Scot of Springfield , with John Miller surety.
