      Margaret J. McCown was born August 11, 1831, and departed this life Ju ly 23, 1918, at 10 o’clock p.m., aged 86 years 11 months and 12 days . She was married to Samuel M. Briscoe March 23, 1851. To this union s ix children were born, four of whom survive: Della Moore of Midland, W . S. Briscoe, Council Bluffs, Iowa, W. L. Briscoe and Mrs. William Fox , both of Stinesville. She united with the Baptist Church more than fo rty years ago. She always attended church regularly until filing healt h and the infirmities of old age in recent years deprived her of tha t privilege. Her husband died in the army in 1863, leaving her at th e age of 35, with five little children and 500 miles from her native h ome and people. Mrs. Briscoe’s father served in the War of 1812 an d also in the Mexican War. Her husband died in the civil War. Two of h er grandsons, Scott Fox and Ray Moore, and her great-grandson, Willia m Willard Fox, are in active service in the European war. Her survivin g relatives are four children, ten grandchildren and fifteen great-gra ndchildren. Rev. W. T. Miller conducted the last rites at the Old Bapt ist Church at Chambersville, where interment took place. The beautifu l floral offerings that adorned the casket gave mute evidence of the l ove and esteem in which Mother Briscoe was held. The choir sang her fa vorite funeral selections. Those from a distance who attended the fune ral were William C. Fox and family, Oolitic; William McCown, Anchor, I ll.; Chas. McCown and family, Midland; Mrs. Della and Ray Moore, Mrs . Wilson and children, Midland; Ross Fox and family, Gosport; Frank Fo x and Family, Gosport; J. M. Van Buskirk and wife, Sand College; Mrs . Ernest Royer, Spencer; Mrs. Ione Wash and children, Frank, Ky….Mrs . Lelia Fox, of Gosport, was here on Thursday night to attend the M. E . Aid which met with Mrs. Sallie Miller, who, with her son, David, wil l join her husband, Oscar Miller, in Washington, D. C., some time thi s month to remain there during the winter… Mrs. Fred Stucky and Mrs . Dora Miller, both of Gosport, and Mrs. John Terry and Mrs. Edward Te rry were all-day guests of Miss Staley and Till Dais on Thursday…Mrs . Frank Sullivan and Miss Mary Neal and little brother, Hoadley, wer e guests of Bloomington relatives this week…After a pleasant week’ s visit with the family of Dave Judah, Miss Bertha Edwards left Saturd ay to visit friends in Ellettsville and Spencer before going to Lowe r City, N.D.
