CAPTAIN THOMAS 2 (George 1 and Deborah (Gardner), b. in
Longmeadow, 1 May, 1651; mar. Sarah Griswold; dau. of Matthew
Griswold, of Lyme, Conn., 11 Sept., 1677. She d. 12 Sept., 1690.
He mar., second, Hannah Bliss, of Springfield, 17 Dec., 1691. She
was b. 26 May, 1665, and was probably daughter of George Colton's ]
second wife, Lydia, by her first husband, Lawrence Bliss. Capt.
Thomas d. 30 Sept., 1728. His widow d. 6 Nov., 1737. They lived
and died in Longmeadow. He was a man of prominence in all public
affairs, both civil and military, and among other records of the time
is the following: "The town of Springfield voted, 30 Nov., 1693,
to send Capt. Thomas Colton and Sergt. Luke Hitchcock to the Bay
to procure a minister to preach the Word of God to the town." The
Rev. Dr. Williams, in a funeral sermon preached a few days after
the death of Capt. Thomas Colton, spoke of him as a man of strong
character, a man of eminent piety, and as having been eminently useful
in the Indian wars. He is said to have been much feared by the
Indians, both for his daring in attack, and from his apparent in-
vulnerability and supernatural protection from their best-laid plans f or
his death or capture.
