    Lafayette Hotel (University Place and 9th Street). He's with a James McCown (age 25, born in NY), relation listed as brother. Eugene has no brother.

    Arrives:
    I don't know exactly when he arrived in Belgium. The passenger list shows him arriving in New York from Belgium 27 Nov 1933.

    Died:

    Per my phone conversation with Jérome Kagan 03/03/2021: Eugene tried to commit suicide on March 20th, 1966 by ingesting a number of pills and alcohol. He was found on the floor the next day by a friend of his, Gabriel Oriol, who took him to the hospital. Eugene survived for one month before he ultimately died of pneumonia. Mr. Kagan received this information (and more) from a gentleman who knew Eugene. Additional information can be found in Mr Kagan's book: Eugene McCown: Démon des années folles.



    Buried:
    Eugene's place of burial has not yet been found. Eugene was destitute and starving at the time before his death. It's possible he was buried in Potter's Field in New York. Or maybe taken home to Missouri? We may never know.

    William M. McCown and James Williams (brother of Nancy Williams, wife of Elijah Thomas McCown) arrived in California after traveling for three months from Indiana. They spent the next few years prospecting for gold.

    Returns from CA flush with gold. Purchases 600 acres of land near Calhoun in Windsor Township. He runs an important live stock ranch and is widely known as a successful breeder of racehorses. The 1870 US census shows he has real estate value of $10,000.

    Buried in the McCown family plot at Laurel Oak Cemetery (Lot: 0576 Gr: 06). Martha and her daughters, Alice and Laura, died during the US cholera epidemic of 1873 that swept through Missouri and most of the Midwest.

    I don't know if THIS Harvey Houston is the same one who married Elizabeth Brown. MORE RESEARCH NEEDED. Elizabeth's father, however, names her, Elizabeth Houston, in his will. Harvey's brother, Robert, married a Mary Brown.
